What Is the Difference Between a Blood and Urine Pregnancy Test?

Pregnancy tests detect a pregnancy hormone called Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone or hCG. Additionally, this hormone can be found in both the blood and urine. Blood tests must be drawn in a qualified medical facility, while urine tests may be taken at home.

What Is HCG?

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is a hormone only produced during pregnancy that is created by the placenta. This hormone tells the body to stop menstruation and continue to thicken the uterine lining as it sustains a growing embryo.

From conception until about 10 weeks, this hormone is produced rapidly. By allowing time for it to build up in the body, a pregnancy test can be taken and will produce a positive result (if pregnancy is present).  A false negative may occur if a test is taken too early and not enough hormone has been produced yet. Therefore, taking a pregnancy close to your expected menstrual cycle is important.

Is a Blood or Urine Test Better?

Blood and urine tests are both helpful in detecting hCG. However, blood tests are slightly more sensitive and can prove beneficial in detecting smaller traces of hCG.

However, urine tests do have benefits. They are less expensive, can be obtained over the counter without a physician’s order, and do not require a lab appointment.

Speak with a professional about your unique situation and what test might benefit you most.
