Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact From Fiction

Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact From Fiction

History was made on June 24th of this year when the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. This decision has left many people conflicted: some are elated with the news while others fear for the future of women’s health.

If you’re a bit confused with all the conflicting information going around, we get it. Here’s a quick breakdown of what this reversal means for the future of abortion and women’s medical care in America.

What Does This Reversal Mean?

The Supreme Court’s new verdict transferred the responsibility of power from The Constitution to the states regarding abortion laws. Each state now has the responsibility to create and uphold abortion laws that best represent their citizens.

For some states, this meant banning abortions completely and for others it means continuing to allow late term abortion.

While abortions are handle differently depending on the state, the complete care for women’s health and ability to thrive remains the same across all states.

What’s Not Changing

One of the main concerns from those who are fearful about this reversal is that women’s lives will be at risk. The good news is, this isn’t true.

Rare but dangerous complications can occur in pregnancies such as an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy happens when a pregnancy implants and grows outside of the uterus. Women who experience an ectopic pregnancy must have the pregnancy removed as soon as possible to prevent life threatening internal bleeding.

Women will not be forced to carry an ectopic pregnancy even if they reside in a state that has banned abortions. Removing this kind of pregnancy is pre-natal care and not considered an abortion.

The Best Path Forward

Protocol for women experiencing an unwanted pregnancy remains the same post Roe. If that’s your situation, following these simple steps are the best way to protect your physical and mental wellbeing.
