Is Abortion Painful?

Many women who are considering abortion may wonder about the level of pain they may experience during the procedure. Abortion can be painful, but a lot depends on the individual woman and the type of abortion procedure..

How Much Pain Do I Experience?

Some women may find that their pain tolerance is quite low, so they will experience more pain than others during an abortion procedure. Others might find the pain to be more uncomfortable, but not overtly painful. The level of pain a woman will experience depends on unique factors such as genetics and her life experiences with pain.

What Kind of Pain Would I Feel During a Medical Abortion?

During a medical abortion, two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, are used to end a pregnancy and expel the pregnancy tissue through the vagina.

Side effects of a medical abortion include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

If you are experiencing pain from a medical abortion, taking medications such as ibuprofen will help to lessen and manage the pain.

What About a Surgical Abortion?

Surgical abortions tend to be more complicated and carry a greater risk of experiencing pain. During a surgical abortion, instruments or medication are used to dilate the cervix, and a suctioning technique or a curette is used to empty the pregnancy tissue from the uterus.

There are certain side effects associated with surgical abortion such as bleeding or cramping. There are also risks that you will want to be aware of, some of which can bring on more pain:

  • Damage to the cervix
  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Infection
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall
