If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy, or have already had an abortion, it’s important to know the potential risks and side effects to your body that may occur after an abortion. One of the risks to be aware of is an incomplete abortion.
An incomplete abortion is a risk in both medical and surgical abortions. It occurs when the contents of your uterus are not completely expelled after an abortion, and tiny pieces of your pregnancy remain inside your body. While an incomplete abortion is typically more common in medical abortions, they can also occur in surgical abortions.
Signs of an Incomplete Abortion
The increased risk of infection of an incomplete abortion is a serious health issue. It’s important you are aware of the signs and seek medical attention right away if you suspect you are dealing with an incomplete abortion.
Contact a medical provider right away if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:
- Moderate to severe vaginal bleeding (saturating more than one pad an hour)
- Lower abdominal and/or pain
- Pain in the back, buttocks, genitalia, and perineum
- Passing blood clots
- A fever
If your medical provider confirms that you are suffering from an incomplete abortion they will likely perform a surgical abortion to ensure any remaining tissue is completely removed from your uterus.
