What is an IUD?
An intrauterine device (IUD) is one of the most popular forms of birth control.
An IUD is a small t-shaped device that is placed in the uterus to prevent fertilization. IUDs can be made from copper or hormone-embedded plastic and can last anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type of device.
Unlike birth control pills, IUDs do not require the woman to take pills and are helpful in avoiding user error.
Can I Get Pregnant Even With an IUD?
Yes. You can become pregnant even with an IUD. While the risk of becoming pregnant while using an IUD is low, it is possible, occurring in roughly 1 out of every 100 users. An IUD’s failure to prevent pregnancy can result from keeping it in past the recommended timeline, improper insertion or movement of the device, or the device falling out altogether.
Are There Health Risks When Becoming Pregnant With an IUD?
If pregnancy does occur when using an IUD, there are some health risks and complications to be aware of.
For those who do become pregnant while using an IUD, the risk of ectopic pregnancy is high. According to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, one study found that 53% of pregnancies occurring while using an IUD were ectopic pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancies are nonviable pregnancies that implant and grow outside of the uterus.
Ectopic pregnancies can be extremely dangerous to the health of the woman when left unnoticed or untreated.
Additionally, women who become pregnant while using an IUD are at a greater risk for miscarriage or preterm delivery, especially when the device is left in the uterus. In some pregnant women, it is not possible to remove the IUD prior to birth due to its location in the uterus.
What to do if You Think You May be Pregnant While Using an IUD
First, we recommend confirming your pregnancy with lab-quality pregnancy testing and an ultrasound scan through your local pregnancy center. Not only will pregnancy testing at a clinic confirm your at-home results, but you’ll also have access to important information regarding your pregnancy through an ultrasound scan, including the location, age, and viability.
During your appointment, one of our qualified healthcare professionals will be able to identify whether or not your pregnancy is ectopic and if there are any health concerns that need to be addressed.
After your examination, our staff will walk you through your pregnancy options, provide you with important resources, and be there to answer any questions you may have.
