You may be noticing changes in your body, such as a missed period, unusual fatigue, nausea, or just a feeling that something is different. These can all be early signs of pregnancy, and it makes sense that you want answers.
However, there is no way to truly confirm a pregnancy without an ultrasound. Symptoms can point you in a direction, but they can’t tell you what’s actually happening. Even a pregnancy test, while a helpful and important first step, only indicates a potential pregnancy. It is not a confirmation; only an ultrasound can do that.
At Life Choices, we offer free, confidential medical services to help you find out for certain. Schedule your appointment today and let us help you get the information you need.
What Your Symptoms Can and Can’t Tell You
Early pregnancy symptoms like a missed period, breast tenderness, nausea, fatigue, or frequent urination are meaningful clues worth paying attention to. They may very well be pointing to a pregnancy, but they can also be caused by stress, hormonal shifts, illness, or other conditions entirely unrelated to pregnancy.
Symptoms can prompt you to take a test. They cannot confirm a pregnancy on their own.
What a Pregnancy Test Actually Does
A pregnancy test detects hCG, the hormone your body produces when a fertilized egg implants. A positive result tells you that the hormone is present.
However, it does not confirm that the pregnancy is progressing, where it is located, or how far along it may be. Many healthcare providers require a positive pregnancy test before performing an ultrasound. This scan will help you get the facts and decide what to do next.
Why an Ultrasound Is the Only True Confirmation
Once you have a positive test, an ultrasound is what takes you from “possibly pregnant” to “here is what is actually happening.” There are a few reasons this matters so much.
First, not every pregnancy continues to develop. Up to 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, often in early weeks and without obvious symptoms. A positive test can remain positive even after a pregnancy has ended. An ultrasound can confirm whether development is occurring and whether a heartbeat is present.
Second, location matters. A pregnancy test cannot tell you where the pregnancy is implanted. In some cases, a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy, and it is a serious medical condition requiring immediate care. An ultrasound can detect this condition.
Third, knowing how far along you are is important for understanding your situation and your options. An ultrasound provides a more accurate gestational age than estimating from your last menstrual period, which can be unreliable.
