Walking through an unplanned pregnancy can be devastating. Thoughts of ‘why me’ or ‘this can’t be happening’ may be swirling through your mind.
If you’ve begun looking into an abortion, finding a safe place to get honest answers is the right place to start. At Life Choices, that’s just what you’ll get. Honest and factual answers to all your abortion questions.
Here’s a brief overview of what an abortion is, how it works and how to make a plan for your future during a crisis pregnancy.
What Are The Different Types of Abortion?
An abortion is a medical or surgical procedure designed to terminate a pregnancy. Gestation of the pregnancy, the scientific name for how many weeks along a pregnancy is, will determine whether women are a candidate for a medical or surgical abortion.
Medical Abortion
Medical abortions use a combination of the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol to terminate a pregnancy. Mifepristone stops a pregnancy from growing, while misoprostol creates strong uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy.
It’s important to note that a medical abortion is only effective in terminating pregnancies no more than 10 weeks gestation.
If you’re unsure exactly how many weeks your pregnancy is, Life Choices can provide a free limited ultrasound to get you that information.
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortions take place in a hospital or clinic. Women will receive local anesthesia for pain management before the procedure starts. The procedure begins by dilating and opening the cervix. Forceps or a vacuum like device will be used to remove the entire pregnancy.
Women should expect some soreness in the days following a surgical abortion.
Making Plans For Future Success
An abortion is a serious medical procedure and taking time to understand the details and risks involved can help you make a confident decision.
